Dr. Nadine Zumbrägel

Dr. Nadine Zumbrägel was the first recipient of the GDCh-Preis für Biokatalyse 2020 in recognition of her outstanding work that made it possible to integrate biocatalysis into the synthesis of heterocycles.

Dr. Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim is a science journalist and science communicator. After completing her doctorate at RWTH Aachen University, Harvard University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research, the chemist joined funk, the online service of ARD and ZDF. There she built up the multiple award-winning science channel maiLab, which today reaches more than 1 million subscribers. Her video "Corona is just getting started" was the most viewed YouTube video in Germany in 2020. On TV, she hosts the science magazine Quarks as the successor to Ranga Yogeshwar and appears for science education on political talk shows, Tagesthemen or heute journal. Most recently, the German Chancellor quoted Nguyen-Kim's words ("Virus, you picked the wrong host") from it in the Bundestag. Her book "Komisch, alles chemisch," which is her declaration of love for chemistry, became Spiegel's No. 3 bestseller of 2019. Nguyen-Kim has received several awards for her work, including the Federal Cross of Merit and Journalist of the Year 2020.
